I view race as a more rationalized
problem in this society today because were more against each other by not
acknowledging the good that we accomplish, rather than putting each other down.
While reading Bonilla-Silva it was very interesting how she mentioned the fact
about “members of the dominant race do not receive the same level of rewards
and (Conversely).” From my understanding I felt like it was being recognized for
all race and not just African Americans but we don’t reward each other for the
good and accomplishments of what we have succeed at doing. As a society today
were more focused on the stereotypical things that are being brought towards
one another rather than focusing on how we can become more united and together
to make better things about each race more aware and noticed.
Reading her discussion on Racialized
Social system Approach to racism gave me the clear mindset on her discussing
the issues as to why we’re so racialized. As an African American I visually
learn that we adapt our personal livings and experience with life; by what were
known to do and what the society put on African Americans as a whole. You have
the same saying that “black people have the worse education rate” or “black
people don’t want to work and are very poor, that’s why we’re so illiterate and
not quite understanding with the knowledge of life”. But we have to take
accountability for those actions as individuals and make a change to those stereotypes
that are made for blacks. Silva mentioned another good point made that “race,
as most scientists acknowledge, are not biologically but socially determined
categories of identity and group association.” That was very reasonable because
in this society we don’t determine our race biologically, but we determine it
by what society points it to be and what others categorize us to be. Each race
has a racial stereotype that is put towards them and makes the people of that
race define themselves as that, because that is what we’re being taught.
Society don’t look into the biological perspective of how you became that race
and what your real ethnicity is, they just go by what were brain washed to
believe and accept.
I did a minor search on the web
about race and the social system and this article by the name of; Race:
Social Concept, Biological Idea by: Gloria Ramon some of the points she was directing about race kind of reflected on some
of the things discussed in the blog, Gloria main focus of the article was to
focus on the Biological idea of race and how it doesn’t mainly exist anymore
due to the thoughts and categorized feelings we have towards each other to
define who we are that we forget the biological meaning of how we became known
as African American, or Hispanic and Caucasian.
Just
to leave in closing a quote given in Gloria article that really made a lot of
sense as to race and society and the generalization of one another that destroys
who we really are as US citizens of America. “Race is an idea that has become so fixed in American society that
there is no room for open-mindedness when challenging the idea of racial
categories”
